SEASONAL PLANNER

Many ask how a Wisconsin farm can grow year-round for the floral industry. Our large assortment of hardy, perennial crops makes it possible.
Cranberry viburnum, hydrangea and bittersweet are examples of crops that can be harvested when the market demands. By growing woody branches with attractive bark such dogwood or berries such as Ilex, bittersweet, and crab apple, we are able to extend our growing season into fall and winter, which also allows us to keep more employees year round.

The stems are uniform, some lateral branching, clean blemish free bark and reliable grading standards. Our northern location gives us a head start on harvest which makes our customers happy.

Dogwood-Yellow Twig
What a great color to liven up a traditional holiday display. Bright, electric chartreuse yellow stems work well in autumn, winter and spring designs. These northern varieties are harvested for the brilliant bark color and because they are cultivated, not gathered from roadsides, the stems are straight, colors vivid and no weird chancre sores on the bark, uniform and handsome. There are not many growers of this item and we see increased demand every single year. This one sells out quickly.

Dogwood-Cardinal
Cardinal Dogwood is a bright candy color red, sometimes it has a coral cast to it near the base of the stem. By far the most vigorous growing Dogwood and the beefiest variety. All of our Dogwood branches come from cultivated fields. The stems are all one year’s worth of growth; clean and straight, well graded, no unsightly bark or blemishes as much wildcrafted Dogwoods have. With the farm located in such a cold climate we are able to harvest our Dogwood branches sooner than almost any grower in the country ensuring timely availability when our customers need it. Dogwood is an increasingly popular seasonal decoration.

Forsythia
Since we are in zone 4 we are somewhat limited with our options for blooming branches. Forsythia is a perennially reliable crop for us and we do quite well with it. All of our branches are two years worth of growth, not harvested every year, so there is considerable branching, generally heavy stems, loads of flower buds. We will force these to the point of green or perhaps yellow petals visible in the bud but not yet open. In colder times of winter we don’t force to such an open stage as they’ll be more protected from cold temps during transport in a more immature stage.

They are beautifully contorted trees. Busy and branchy at the top, a twisted clean trunk about halfway up, ends are roughly 3″ in diameter. Willow-Pussywillow-Giant
Our “standard” Pussywillow is far from ordinary with extra large glossy silvery catkins. The plant grows quickly so the stems are more whips with no lateral branching but loads of catkins. We cut stems from 2.5′ to 6′. These work well indoors or out, regardless of temperatures. They can easily be air dried by simply leaving upright in a dry vase. They will last indefinitely and the catkins won’t drop off. We begin forcing these branches in January and they’ll usually ship with about 50% of the catkins exposed however they’ll keep opening up with warmer temps and hydration.
PRICE PER BUNCH: $5/tips; $6/medium; $9/tall

Willow-Pussywillow-Prairie
The absolute earliest plant that blooms with the catkins naturally exposed in mid February. We market this as Prairie Willow or Purple Heirloom Pussywillow. The blonde bark, thin grassy stems, loads of small dark purple catkins are unique, very prairie looking and distinctly different from the standard heavy and dark pussywillows. When fresh the catkins are dark pink to purple. They will quickly air dry to a ash gray color and contrast nicely with the light bark and airy stems.

Fantail Willow-Winter Branches
The Fantail Willow at this time of the year is dormant and the stems are brown and defoliated. Once we get into late January we will cut these stems and get them into our forcing room to get the multitude of small white catkins to emerge on the contorted stems. With the increased usage of these stems as design-minded orchid stakes we sometimes have a hard time keeping up with demand. Also, as more and more consumers are introduced to these stems demand has increased along with their exposure. Salix sachalinensis is an interesting landscape plant; large and dense it almost has a tropical look to it in the summer. Only about 20% of the plant will grow the desired fasciated stems so harvest is much more labor intensive than other decorative branches. Each stem must be located from within the mass of stems and individually removed.

Dogwood-Black
NOTE: available to order now but SHIPS after November 5
A variety that is actually dark, dark purple to the point of being black. In the right application it is stunning, unusual and remarkably makes other colors in the design pop out.

Dogwood-Midwinter Fire
A bi-color dogwood that is yellow at the base of the stem and deepens to a strong coral color. This northern variety is harvested for the brilliant bark color and because it is cultivated, not gathered from roadsides, the stems are straight, colors vivid and no weird chancre sores on the bark, uniform and handsome. The plant is somewhat small so no stems are over 3′ but they are all loaded with lateral branching so there is some volume if not height. This is the last of the Dogwood to lose its leaves, and they are tenacious on this plant, so we don’t usually have this available until the spring time.

PRICE PER BALE: $70
STEMS PER BUNCH: 10x stems
BUNCHES PER BALE: 10x bunches
GRADE: Medium- one size only

Flame Willow
Flame Willow is the first of our branches to naturally lose its foliage in the early autumn. The plant produces multiple thin, uniform, straight stems that have minimal lateral branching so we bunch 12-15 stems per bunch. The color is bright copper orange. I like to call it “harvest color” dogwood. It, along with Yellow Dogwood is one of our more popular branches for spring container design.
PRICE PER BUNCH: $6/medium; $8/tall
PRICE PER BALE: $60/medium; $80/tall

Big Red Bud Willow
Our Big Red Bud Willow is simply our Giant Pussywillow before the catkins emerge. Once these willow branches lose their leaves we cut the stems to showcase the bright, almost metallic, burgundy hulls that cover the catkins. These plants need about 6 weeks of dormancy before we are able to force them open to their bountiful spring form, but they have so much interesting texture at this stage we market them in autumn under a different name for seasonal decorating.

Curly Willow-Green
Deep sage green at the base and on thicker stems and olive green towards the tips. The super tall single stems of Curly Willow are only available in the green color. They are beautifully contorted trees. Busy and branchy at the top, a twisted clean trunk about halfway up, ends are roughly 3″ in diameter. Sage to olive green color on the one to two years worth of growth, usually darker at the tips or the newer growth. These do require extra shipping charges.

Willow-Pussywillow-Multi-Hued
I call these Multi-Hued since when they stay on the plant and grow and develop they’ll go through several color changes. It is the latst variety we cut and one that doesn’t “force” open too well. The catkins are only slightly smaller than our Giant Pussywillow but they are white as opposed to the silver gray of the Giant.

Larch
One of the few coniferous trees to lose its needles each fall. The Larch or Tamarack trees on the farm are cut for spring foliage branches. Crabapple Branches-Flowering
I know that spring is progressing when I see the multitude of Crabapples blooming at the farm. Usually just before Memorial weekend they’re at their peak and in white, pink and red blazes across the field. These branches are cut about 15% open. Due to variations in size and lateral branches we will use some of each of the two grades to fill a box most efficiently. We vary the stem counts and keep the price the same between the two grades.

Lilac
Is this my favorite flower? I am not certain, but it does mean a lot to me as it does to so many other people. I think it is because it is the first real bloomer of spring and a grand statement making flower at that. We grow a multitude of different French hybrid varieties; some double, some single; lavender, purple, burgundy, pink, white, bi-color; some fragrant and some not; big, branchy and truly floriferous with most stems having multiple flower heads. “Sensation” is deep purple with each petal rimmed with white and “Beauty of Moscow” is a white variety, but the buds are pink when closed, and the flowers are double petals and large. In any case, these truly are some of the best Lilacs you will have ever seen.

Pennycress
This plant loves growing as a weed in ground that was disturbed during the growing season the previous year. Many farmers simply spray it to clear the ground. We look for it in fact and try to find thick patches of it to cut. It holds like iron and stays bright green. It can easily be dried and then the plant will turn tan. The only drawback is you will need to change the water if holding it in the cooler as it will smell like onions, but don’t worry, the cut stems do not.

Viburnum-Snowball
We have acres of Snowball Viburnum and we also come on nice and late in the season with it some years even early June weddings are not a problem. We do cut this in the green stage. That being said the plant will keep ripening even in the cooler. This crop generally starts the second week of Lilac availability. The one thing we dislike about Snowball is when it is ready to cut, it is ALL ready to cut and we have one of our shortest harvest windows of any item we grow….but they sure are beautiful!

Camassia (Indian Hyacinth)
I love this plant as a landscape addition. It is a vigorous early spring bulb bloomer, exceptionally hardy and competes well against weeds. Tall stems with spider like blue flowers. As the lower flowers bloom it helps to pick off the spent flowers to encourage the upper blooms to open up.

Ninebark-Diablo
This is a foliage crop for us even though we start cutting it when the flower buds look like miniature pine cones. Early in the season the foliage is not nearly as dark and is somewhat mottled with green. The two weeks when the plant is in bloom we take a break from cutting and wait until the blossoms are finished as they’ll shatter so easily. The seed pod clusters that come after are beautiful and durable and full of texture and interest. Once we have exhausted all the seeded stems we continue to cut this until early September simply for the rich, deep and dark foliage. The bark on the stems also provides interest as it can be a bit shaggy and two toned.

So very different than any other Clematis you’ve come across. This one grows along the ground and does not climb; the flowers are numerous and small; the foliage is a dusty purple near the tips. One of the few coniferous trees to lose its needles each fall. The Larch or Tamarack trees on the farm are cut for spring foliage branches. The newly emerged needles are so soft, not at all piney or evergreen looking. They hold well and will keep opening up in water. We love Peonies! Fun to watch growing, easy to harvest, incredible flowers, and almost everyone has some connection to and appreciation of Peonies. With so very many varieties and global growing areas they’ve become an essential item. To make things simple we grade out Peonies by color, not variety. Generally we have a light pink, dark pink, red, white and coral and we also package them in 5 stem bunches. These are reliably available the month of June, with the Corals starting at the very end of May and the the colors usually the second week of June.

Solomon’s Seal
Offering a limited supply of the shorter (24″ +/-) variegated Solomon’s Seal; even though this has flowers it is sold as a FOLIAGE CROP not a floral element
Solomon’s Seal is found growing wild in patches on forest margins. A distinct big plant that when we can find an abundant stand we will harvest for cut material. Sometimes I think of it as Lily of the Valley on steroids as the leaves have that slight blue or dull matte green color and the small bell flowers dangle in a similar way. It is a really cool landscape plant against a fence or wall too. The cultivated variety that we grow as a cut is usually variegated and considerably shorter.

Sorbaria (White Sumac)
Accepted common names are False Astilbe or False Spirea. Personally the astilbe nomenclature works but I don’t get the Spirea reference so much. In any case, we market this as White Sumac since the leaves look like a mini sumac leaf and the blossoms somewhat do resemble each other. We cut these flowers before any of the florets are open. Viburnum-Cranberry
In mid June when the Cranberry Viburnum is blooming the farm is striped with bright white rows of shrubs covered in flowers. But it is not the white flower we are after. Shortly after bloom the plant sets large clusters of pea sized berries. We start cutting in very early July when the fruit is still green and only very slightly dusted with red. As we progress through the season the berries ripen to a bright solid red, a bit more every week until we are done in late August or early September. The stems are thick and woody, the foliage detailed and somewhat maple like.

Hydrangeas-Annabelle
Currently, we are cutting fresh WHITE and PINK Annabelles and mid to end of July they should be in the “green” mature stage.
We are usually able to get a few weeks of these each summer. The heads can be as large as a basketball cut in half but are usually closer to tether ball size. They are cut in a mature and “dryable” state and saturated green with 3′ stems.

Larch
One of the few coniferous trees to lose its needles each fall. The Larch or Tamarack trees on the farm are cut for spring foliage branches. The newly emerged needles are so soft, not at all piney or evergreen looking. They hold well and will keep opening up in water. A few stems might have mature or newly formed cones but that is not we cut this for, it adds interest but this is a foliage crop.

Ninebark-Green
This is the native variety of Ninebark. The foliage is a basic green so we don’t cut it for the leaves, rather we cut it for the loads of seed pods it produces. The plant grows bigger than the selected varieties and the stems are fatter. They arc over with the weight of the pink seed pod clusters creating a nice cascade.

Fantail Willow-Green
The green Fantail we sell in the summer is a fresh item in that it does require water and temp control as any fresh cut flower would. We cut the stems and then hand defoliate them except for a tuft of foliage at the ends of the stem. These remaining leaves can be removed or left on. As an orchid stake, or another application out of water, these green stems will turn black over a period of time.

Hydrangeas-Tardiva
At the very beginning of the season we are able to cut some white but once they mature and begin to turn they are unique flowers to say the least. We cut these in a mature state. Each of the large female florets are surrounded by spent male florets. These are called Lace Cap PG’s or simply Tardiva Hydrangeas. We grow several varieties where some are bright pink when mature and others stay a soft green. There is always some sun scorching or antiquing on these blossoms and that only adds to their appeal.

Bittersweet-Green
Once the berries are set and the size of small peas in early July we will cut this item as a fresh item, meaning it does require water and controlled storage temps. It is a lush viney foliage and the berries just add interest. It doesn’t drink all that well since the stems are so woody and long but removing the foliage and exposing the green fruit will allow it to be used successfully anywhere.

Crabapple Branches-Fruiting
Some varieties of Crabapple we grow are let to flower and then in the summer we begin harvest as green fruit and progressively they get riper as we get towards September. Fully foliated in the summer and then depending on the weather there could be some autumnal foliage left on the stems but for the most part the leaves are off in late Sept. The fruit are large blueberry size to perhaps small plum and generally in clusters.
